May 2006 - Ask Kim Column
Dear Kim:
I have been trying to adopt for a little over a year. It has been very draining. There seems to be one obstacle after another. I would really like to adopt 2 children. Is this something I'm supposed to be doing or am I just spinning my wheels?
Lisa S., 43
Katy, Texas
Dear Lisa:
You are fostering a little boy who, in essence, is already yours; but because you are so prone to worrying (AKA: anal moments!) you're having a difficult time hearing what your angels are trying to tell you. Don't sweat it! You know in your heart that you've received divine guidance to adopt...now it's just a matter of trusting in the universe.
Your angels are helping you work on the issue of patience. The more you demonstrate impatience, the more you will slow down the process. You're doing all you can, so get off the Ways & Means Committee and stop micro-managing the process by continually asking your angels, "So---what's happening NOW? Are you guys really helping me? ARE you? WHEN will I know something? Huh? HUH?!"
Everything is moving forward like clockwork. You'll adopt the boy first, then a girl...and then another little boy. Turn your brain off, re-ignite your faith, and lay back and enjoy this time. It's happening as we speak. And let me wish you a very Happy Mother's Day!

Dear Kim:
Have been reading your column faithfully since moving to Houston to take a teaching internship position. Things have not worked out as planned. The middle school has been a poor match for me; and something doesn't feel clear about applying to the elementary level either. Yet, apply I must, with all the job fairs coming up. I feel overwhelmed and seriously confused, and would welcome some light on the situation.
Stephen L., 54
Houston, Texas
Dear Stephen:
You were directed by your angels to move to Houston, so that was absolutely the right thing to do. What I'm about to tell you may be truly surprising. Your life's purpose is connected with teaching---but not in a classroom. You're already burned-out teaching at the middle school level---and elementary-age children will have you gulping extra-strength Excedrin and drinking Maalox out of the bottle before lunchtime. It IS time for a change, and you've earned it!
You've successfully cleared up your difficult issues, you've honored many of your spiritual contracts with others, and now, you're going to be much happier if you have control over your day-to-day structure in a business of your own. Have you ever considered starting a consulting business in which you share all of your extensive knowledge and experience nurturing, motivating, and inspiring kids to reach their full potential? Your consulting business would entail offering workshops and seminars for parents and other caregivers. And at the same time, you can get started on your first book.
So...what do you do to earn a living in the meantime, you ask? You'd be a lot more satisfied moving out of academia and applying for a job in outside sales while you get your own business off the ground. You're in a different chapter of your life now, Stephen. The universe is offering you unlimited opportunities, terrific abundance, and more security than you've ever had before. This is the perfect time to pull out all the stops and focus on what would make your heart and soul sing.

Dear Kim:
I am a single mother and I work as a front end manager. I also run a karaoke show on Sunday nights, which I love! When my son was a few weeks old, I started watching the show, Nashville Star, and I would cry. My question is, why do I get so emotional? Is music something that is in my future or do I know deep down that it's something I'll never get the chance to do? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I need a little more direction!
Becky G., 24
Georgetown, Texas
Dear Becky:
Sweetie---you need a LOT more direction! What are you doing?! Why are you sitting on that beautiful behind watching your life go by---and not pursuing your dream? Your gorgeous singing voice is the best-kept secret in town! Watching other women perform is so emotionally moving because it touches your heart and soul. Performing and writing songs represents your life's work.
Start writing songs NOW; and sing in all the public venues that you can. Your break will come when you muster the courage, pack up your belongings, grab your little boy, and head for Nashville---which for you, is the promised land. (I keep picturing you crying buckets as you watch the film, Walk the Line.) The sooner you get there, the sooner you'll be successful.
You've got the pipes---you just have to face your fear of rejection. We ALL suffer rejection! So what?! Don't waste any more time! Just imagine how you'll feel if you're still working as a front end manager five years from now. Enough said? Break a leg!

Dear Kim:
I retired in 2004 from my job of 23 years to stay home and provide daycare for my then seven-month-old grandson. Soon after, my husband had to retire from law enforcement due to herniated discs. Sadly, I had to go back to work and my grandbaby had to go into daycare, which broke my heart. I've worked part-time for the last two years, until my contract ended in February. I would give anything to be able to care for my grandchild, who is now three. Also my husband wants me to keep on working. I want to do what brings me joy. What do the angels tell you?.
Linda G., 57
Houston, Texas
Dear Linda:
How wonderful that you were loving and generous enough to provide childcare for your grandson. What a lucky little boy! You are an important mentor and spiritual guide for him, so he needs to spend as much time with you as possible in these formative years. Linda---I know you're ready for some frank and candid information, or you never would have written.
First, I want to discuss your hubby. Having suffered herniated discs myself, I know how painful they can be and how tough it is to go on taking care of one's responsibilities and commitments while dealing with neck/back/leg problems. No disrespect to him, but he isn't thinking about you and what would make you happy---he is thinking of himself. I'm hearing that your hubby finds it much more peaceful to have the grandchild out of the house. And he likes you working so that he doesn't have to worry so much about money. I believe that you realize those things, and you've lost some respect and affection for him because of it.
Linda, I have two questions for you: What is your husband doing to get back on track financially?! And, why are you allowing him to dictate to you and control the choices about your quality of life? Is he a general in a banana republic? Of course, you'd be happiest spending as much time with the grandchild as possible. So, how can you make that happen?
Your angels are recommending that you open a small daycare center in your home for children your grandson's age. (Your hubby will offer resistance, but remember that you'll never have this time back with the little man if you don't do something to change things NOW.) The daycare would offer you plenty of time with the grandbaby, while he enjoys valuable playtime with peers, and you make money at the same time. He'll be in kindergarten before you know it, and then you can shut down the small daycare and transition into your life's purpose, which is writing. I believe that you already knew all of this, but you just needed some confirmation. Go ahead and do exactly what you feel you need to do with that precious little boy! He's depending on you.
