August 2006 - Ask Kim Column

Dear Kim:
I have been in a relationship for several years. I care very much, but I'm not sure I'm "in love." I have had other relationships where I was the more committed one, so I appreciate the level of commitment and loyalty from my partner. My partner has custody of a seven year old adopted daughter. The daughter is sweet, but I have to admit I am not used to "sharing" a partner and I think her responsibilities sometimes interfere with our relationship. Then I feel like I'm being selfish. Should I stay or move on?
Mary C., 53
Richmond, VA

Dear Mary:
As nice as he is, the man you're with is not Mr. Right--he's Mr. Right Now. You've been romantically coasting in this relationship. The problem isn't the darling daughter, but the fact that you yearn for much more than you have with him. He simply isn't enough for you. Time to break it off so you can move onward and upward!

Dear Kim:
I get fed up every so often and wonder if I'm on the right track. I work hard but my job is not as fulfilling as I thought it would be. Also, I would really like a house with my own garden. I can't afford to move at the moment--is there much of a chance of a new house for me?
Maggie S., 44
Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

Dear Maggie:
You have many wonderful things in store for you! Isn't it amazing how important a home is? It's a special nest that represents our healing and recharging refuge from the world. You will have a home on the water that allows you a brilliant view of the craggy Scottish coastline. In the summer, there will be a lush profusion of flowers that encircle your light-filled cottage. It will be a place where you write your best-selling novels, based upon life in the small community where you'll be living. Your books will be like A Year in Provence or Under the Tuscan Sun--but with a spiritual slant. Doesn't that sound heavenly? It's the destiny you planned for yourself.

Dear Kim:
I have a boyfriend who I have been dating for about a year and a half. I would like to know if He is The One.
Seema B., 20
High Point, NC

Dear Seema:
He isn't The One in regard to a Mr. Wonderful, but He is The One the universe brought into your life as a learning experience. In this relationship, you're supposed to learn about building better self worth, developing more confidence in your decision-making, and becoming independent and empowered. You'll know you've learned everything you can from This One when you feel gung-ho about being responsible for yourself financially. Then you're ready to move on. Your soul mate is due to arrive when you are 25. So, avoid marrying This One...because he isn't The One!

Dear Kim:
Will I be successful with oil painting and/or writing, or should I give up? I really need to make some money on my own.
Kathern W., 64
Micco, Florida

Dear Kathern:
Since when is "giving up" in your vocabulary? You'll be writing as a hobby and painting to earn a living. Concentrate on painting portraits. Although you're going to create a whole new style of painting, it will be rather reminiscent of Impressionism. Your artistry will be celebrated and your paintings will be sold in prestigious galleries. I see tasteful nudes on the beach. Your use of color is extraordinary...as is your ability to paint the sea. Every time someone looks at one of your paintings, they'll feel immediately recharged and rejuvenated. That's how you will achieve your destiny as a holistic healer in this lifetime.

----------------------------------------------------------

Dear Kim:
I have been through a lot including divorce and wish to know what my real destiny is, and how to get there from here.
Samuel T.
Houston, Texas

Dear Samuel:
Your biggest dilemma is that you're out of steam, but you cannot take time off to rest, heal, and recharge. So, you must go on in spite of being spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted. Your life's work involves an entrepreneurial endeavor centering around real estate. You will be happiest flipping houses; which means that you will buy a home, renovate, and then sell it for a profit. You should start this business in Houston. Eventually, I see you moving to Phoenix, Arizona, where you will carry on the same work. You will become financially successful if you pursue real estate because it is part of your destiny to be philanthropic. You have the blessed opportunity to share your hard-earned money with others around the world who are less fortunate. Your new motto should be, I must...because I can.
